Royal Doulton 1870 Aesthetic Movement Ceramic Pitcher covered in a dark brown etched transfer pattern of Oriental flowering vines with small grasshoppers and flies, the neck shaped as a curved board forming a wide mouth with an Oriental brocade pattern; "Doulton / Burslem" seal mark with Crown to base. Height 10 3/4 inches ( 27.3 cm.). NOTE: Produced during the short period known as the Aesthetic Movement spearheaded by designers like Christopher Dresser and the Orientalist enthusiasts discovering Chinese and Japanese handicraft for the first time and competing with them for commercial design circa 1870. The movement gave way to Art Nouveau and eventually to Art Deco. See More
