The second of three daughters of a grocer, Robert Pratt, Anne took up drawing in her childhood when other activities were impaired by poor health. She would go on to write and illustrate more than twenty books, the most famous being The Flowering Plants, Grasses, Sedges, and Ferns of Great Britain, a work in five volumes which began publication in 1855.
