LOT 482 Scourged Christ. Sicily, 17th century. H. 51 cm. Sicilian pink alabaster with grey "veins". Nearly full-round figure of Christ sitting on a kind of rock base, the upper part of the body turned in the opposite direction to the crossed arms. The inner wall with red cold painting, on the outer wall remains of golden ornamental decoration. Roughly finished on the back and with additions in the base area. Partial l. rest. and best. Provenance: Formerly French private collection. With an essay by Dr. Charles Avery, Girton, Cambrige, 10 March 2015, Avery presents some comparative examples of the pink alabaster figure presented here. An Ecce Homo, very similar in posture, but designed as a standing figure, exists in a private collection not further specified by Dr. Avery. A half-figure of a flagellated man, ending below the loincloth and conceived either as a sitting or standing figure, was called up at Christie's in New York in 2004. There was also a very similar figure in pink alabaster with grey "veins" at Phillips, London (8. 7. 1992).
