The 'Zeeuwse knop' or Zeeland button forms an important part of Zeeland's traditional costume. Zeeland is the least populated, westernmost province of the Netherlands, formed by a number of islands and peninsulas. It was first worn by men during the late 17th century. Traditionally mounted in silver or gold, the size of the knop was indicative of the wearer's wealth and status, while the design is thought to derive from jewels commissioned by Zeeland's Sephardic Jewish population that had fled persecution in Spain and Portugal during the 15th century. The filigree technique has much earlier origins having been brought to Europe from Syria by the Etruscans. From the late 19th century, the button was finally adopted by women predominantly in the form of brooches and hat pins.
