Jeffreys, Judge George (1645-1689), "The Hanging Judge" Document signed "Jeffreys C" as Lord High being a petition to Jeffreys recommending George Creamer to a Chancery appointment, following the death of John Ffarrar Esq. late Recorder of Lynn Regis. Jeffreys has signed to base of the document presumably to indicate his agreement. Jeffreys earned his infamous reputation as the notorious "Hanging Judge" for his draconian sentences handed down at the 'Bloody Assizes' in Taunton after the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685 which brought to an end the Monmouth Rebellion. Documents signed by him are surprisingly uncommon, 2 pages, folio, integral blank, 12 April 1687 Footnote: Note: Purchased Mullock's Auctions, 23 April 2009, lot 132
