after PETER PAUL RUBENS (Flemish 1577-1640) A PAINTING, "Christ and the Penitent Sinners," MUNICH, 1923, oil on canvas, signed "Rich. Pfeiffer, Munchen, Cop. 1923," artist, Richard Pfeiffer (1878-1962). 58" x 52" Note: A "sacra conversione"(Sacred Conversation) between Christ, Saints, King and criminal. The sacra conversione is a composition meant to inspire the viewer towards religious contemplation, they are also noted for grouping historical characters with no regard to time or space. The weeping, nude figure of Mary Magdalene kneels, wrapped in a white robe, acknowledging the divinity of the risen Christ. Christ stands at the opening of a cave/tomb, showing his wounds to Saint Peter who clasps his hands asking for forgiveness; Peter denied his teacher three times previous; the criminal Dismas, "The Good Thief," present at the Crucifixion, holds a cross, and King David reminds the viewer of Christ's royal bloodline and fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Provenance: Private collection, Saint Louis.; Private Collection, Houston.
