Friedrich Hoffstadt (1802-1846), stud. initially law in Erlangen, later in Munich. His professional stations are Ansbach, Frankfurt and Aschaffenburg. His passion, however, was medieval art. His work on the ''Basic Rules of the Gothic Style ...'' was introduced by King Ludwig I as a teaching tool. Large-format, independent works are very rare. Here is a Trappist in front of a wall praying in front of a shrine, behind which a small monastery complex in front of an alpine mountain landscape is depicted. Surrounded by neo-gothic tracery over a chorale in the pedestal.
