Description

SAN GIROLAMO (347-420 d.C.) - In vitas patrum percelebre opus. Lyon: Mareschal, 1520.A good work in a fascinating contemporary binding. (245 x 175mm). Title within woodcut border, full-page woodcut of Saint Jerome, numerours illustrations and historiated initials, rubricated in red, some early annotation (few occasional stains, minor losses to corners of title). Contemporary blindstamp calf over wooden boards, the front cover contains small stamps in a panel of Fleur de Lys, Lion, Griffin and Dove, with the letters "H.C." at the bottom. The back cover divided geometrically contains the Tudor Rose, grotesque winged fingers, and 4 designs of a heart, two hands and two feet surmonounted by 3 swords and a spear on the right; one design contains the letter "iobs". Spine in different leather with title manuscripted on red ink, parts of metal clasps (lacking one clasp, light rubbing to extremities and joints). Provenance: William Henry Bliss (1835-1911, English scholar; ex libris).ITSAN GIROLAMO (347-420 d.C.) - In vitas patrum percelebre opus. Lione: Mareschal, 1520.Bella opera illustrata entro affascinante legatura coeva in buono stato di conservazione.(245 x 175mm). Frontespizio entro cornice xilografica, xilografia a piena pagina di San Girolamo, numerose illustrazioni nel testo e capilettera istoriati, iniziali rubricate in rosso, qualche nota coeva a margine (sporadiche lievi macchie, minime mancanze agli angoli del frontespizio). Legatura coeva in pelle con impressioni a secco su assi di legno; al recto decorata a grifoni, gigli e leoni rampanti entro griglia contornata da cornice floreale, alla base le lettere H. C. Al verso decorata al centro da 4 riquadri con scudi araldici raffiguranti un cuore trafitto da una lancia, due mani e due piedi sormontati da tre spade, ai lati la scritta "Iobs" e la rosa dei Tudor e alla base i simboli dei 4 evangelisti il tutto entro doppia cornice. Dorso in pelle stampata con titolo manoscritto su vernice rosa; chiusura con ganci (mancanza di un gancio, lievi difetti e mancanze più marcate alla giuntura). Provenienza: William Henry Bliss (1835-1911, studioso inglese; ex libris).
