EUSTACHI, Bartolomeo (c.1500-1574) - Tabulae anatomicae. Rome: Francesco Gonzaga, 1714.First edition. Eustachi, physician to Cardinal Giulio della Rovere, was renowned for his reliance on autopsy to study anatomy rather than the works of Greek medical writers. These anatomical plates remained unpublished for 150 years until the anatomist and papal physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, obtained them for the sum of 600 scudi (paid by the Pope) and published them for the inauguration of the hospital library of S. Spirito (later known as the Biblioteca Lancisiana); they were regularly republished throughout the eighteenth century.Folio (338 x 230mm). Engraved illustration on title-page depicting an anatomical dissection in a lecture theatre, 47 numbered engraved plates (plate XVIII and p.61 with repaired tear, some occasional staining). Modern half leather (some rubbing). Provenance: Il Polifilo.ITEUSTACHI, Bartolomeo (c.1500-1574) - Tabulae anatomicae.
