Chinese Ming Dynasty Period, Chenghua DouCai dragon lidded jar. The porcelain potted in jar shape, having thick potted body, sturdily potted in a bulbous body, ovoid belly on middle gently tapered on shoulder toward prominent, with short neck opening, with helmet dome lid with finial bud, and raised on small round foot base. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the DouCai design color. Doucai decoration the design is outlined in underglaze blue and filled in with overglaze colored enamels except blue. Colors which fit together but also contrasting or joined colors. Decoration in a combination of underglaze cobalt blue outlines and enamels added on top of the fired glaze, within the outlines. The main belly and the dome lid decorated with snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through cumulus clouds above thrashing Li-shui waves, in vivid tones color dragon squama rounded the jar to chasing flaming pearl amidst flames. The shoulder and the foot base festooned with geometric petals. The neck adorned with scrolling ruyi. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. The Lines of the drawings are clear, the light and dark shades are subtle. The colors are harmonious, elegant and exquisite, the composition is sophisticated, simply a feast for the eye.
