Note:
Eugène GIRARDET belonged to a Swiss family that had artists since the 18th century.
His two uncles had visited Egypt, his father had engraved episodes of the war in Algeria based on paintings by Horace VERNET (1789 - 1863).
He studied with Jean-Léon GEROME (1824 - 1904) who encouraged him to visit the East what he did in the Maghreb in 1974 when he was 21 years old. Enthusiastic, he returned to North Africa several times during the 1870s. His attraction for the austere lifestyles and particular customs of the people of the south led him to explore the southernmost oases on the Sahara coast. In 1898, he visited Egypt and Palestine.
He exhibited in the major French and European exhibitions in Paris, Munich and Berlin and in 1906 he participated in the colonial exhibition in Marseille.
It is possible that our painting was included in the Eugène Girardet retrospective at the Georges Petit Gallery in 1899.
