狮子又名“狻猊”，自古便被视作一种祥瑞的神兽，常用以装饰陵墓、石窟寺和各种生活用品。汉书记载，安息国和疏勒国曾派遣使者向汉章帝和汉顺帝进献狮子。唐朝有名的大书法家虞世南所作的《狮子赋》中有“镇目电暇，发声雷响”等句，形容狮子的灵活与凶猛。明清两代紫禁城中多陈设铜狮，不仅显耀宫廷的豪华，而且用以彰显帝王“尊贵”和“威严”此件狮子张口怒目，鬃毛浓密，背上有座垫，装饰华丽。尾巴高扬竖立，背上有一出戟尊，肩饰双狮首，铜狮在阳光照耀下，更加绚丽，光彩夺目。这件鎏金铜狮子香熏造型大气，时代特征明显， 收藏价值极高。
