Description

IWC. An Extremely Rare and historically interesting Stainless Steel Chronograph Wristwatch, given to Jose Ramos-Horta, in celebration of his receiving of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize.Model/Reference: Portuguese Chronograph/ IW371446Movement: Signed Case No: 3173090Year: Circa 1998Calibre: 79350, automaticDial: Silvered and engine turned subsidiary dials, signed Case: 41mm, stainless steel, secured with 4 screws case back, signed Strap: Endangered species, stainless steel buckle, signed注脚萬國,「Portuguese Chronograph」IW371446型號,非常罕有及具歷史意義精鋼自動上弦計時腕錶,年份約1998。是當年萬國曾送給 Jose Ramos-Horta 以慶祝他獲得1996年諾貝爾和平獎。This very significant timepiece was presented to Jose Ramos-Horta, the East Timorese activist and politician in celebration of him becoming the co-recipient of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize along with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo for "Working towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor"This IWC Portuguese Chronograph watch was generously donated by Mr Ramos-Horta for a charity auction in Sydney Australia to raise funds for a health program in Timor-Leste. Jose Ramos-Horta was born on 26th December 1949. Early on in his career, Ramos-Horta was actively involved in the development of political awareness in Portuguese Timor, which resulted in him being exiled for two years in 1970-71. Still in his mid 20's he was appointed Foreign Minister in the "Democratic Republic of East Timor". Just days before the Indonesian invasion of East Timor, Ramos-Horta went to the United Nations in New York to make them fully aware of the atrocities that were occurring in his homeland. Throughout the occupation of East Timor by Indonesia, it is reputed that 102,000 East Timorese nationals would die. Ramos-Horta shared the receiving of the Nobel Peace Prize with fellow Timorese, Bishop Ximenes Belo. The Nobel committee chose to honour the laureates for their "sustained efforts to hinder the oppression of a small people" hoping that "this award will spur efforts to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict of East Timor based on the people's right to self-determination"Throughout the remainder of his political career Ramos-Horta has held many significant positions of responsibility including Foreign and Defence Ministerial positions. Finally on 8 July 2006, Ramos-Horta was appointed Prime Minister by President Gusmao. On 20 May 2007 he was inaugurated as President of East Timor. In 2008, Jose Ramos-Horta was shot and survived an assassination attempt, and recuperated in Darwin Australia.
