Frith (Francis)Sinai and Palestine, engraved second title with photographic vignette, 37 albumen plates, occasional light foxing, a little, mainly marginal, water staining to a few places, light browning to tissue guards, joints split, several leaves loose (includingengraved title), original green grain morocco over cloth boards, rubbed and scuffed, cloth stained and slightlyfaded, spine damaged and hinges started, folio (448 x 315mm),William MacKenzie, Glasgow & Edinburgh,1862.*** Frith (1822-1898) was one of the first to experiment with glass negatives. The glass allowed him to print his photographs many times and publish them for a wide audience. Each photograph took a few minutes to create, eliminating temporary and moving things. Frith prepared and fixed the photographs in a tent or ancient tomb, despite the danger of using explosive materials such as liquid ether and gun cotton in the desert heat.
