It is the third largest North American subspecies after the Western and Alaskan Moose. Males stand on average 1.7 - 2.0m (5.6 - 6.6ft) at the shoulder and weigh on average around 634kg (1398 lbs). Eastern Moose antlers have an average span of about 1.5m (4.9ft) across.

Males can be aggressive during mating season and have been known to attack anything that provokes them.

Eastern Moose are hunted for food and sport during the autumn and winter months.
