A boxwood netsuke of a frog on a folded leafBy Hakuryu, Iwami Province, early 19th century
The large frog seated, its head raised, on a folded leaf, the veins of the leaf executed in relief and in ukibori, the wood bearing a good patina, the eyes inlaid; signed with faint ukibori characters Unko Hakuryu saku (made by Unko Hakuryu). 6.3cm (2½in).注脚黄楊彫根付 葉に蛙 銘 「雲江白竜作」 19世紀前期

Although Hakuryu is recorded as an inhabitant of Kyoto, the work is very similar to that produced in Iwami Province, leading one to speculate that it may be by another of the same name or perhaps made by Hakuryu in homage to the Iwami style of carving.
