A SILVER AND COPPER INLAID COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF SYAMATARATIBET, CIRCA 14TH CENTURY
Himalayan Art Resources item no.16715
11 cm (4 3/8 in.) high注脚Richly inlaid with silver and copper, and inset with semi-precious stones, this small but sumptuous sculpture depicts Syamatara (Green Tara) with a slender physique. Syamatara is one of the most popular forms of the bodhisattva, invoked to dispel fear and danger. A related figure of Syamatara, with similar face, hair, and lined dhoti, was sold at Christie's, New York, 13 September 2011, lot 306. Also compare the wide, plump, and slightly pointy lotus petals to that of a 14th-century bronze figure of Dragpa'I Pel sold at Bonhams, New York, 14 March 2017, lot 3231.
