(frame)William McKendree Snyder was a central figure in the artistic community of Southeastern Indiana during the second half of the 19th century. Other than a few trips East and several stays in Cincinnati, Ohio, Snyder spent most of life there, painting attractive views of the river town of Madison. Eventually better know for his autumnal beechwood scenes, "his early landscapes are less repetitious in subject and more interesting as depictions of local scenes, some of the better ones being views of Madison as seen from the bluff northwest of town." (Peat, 64.)Hanover Bend is a spectacular example of Snyder's early work, featuring the most iconic view at Hanover College overlooking the river, just a few miles west of Madison, now known as "Logan's Point" or, simply, "The Point," named after Captain George Logan (1780-1875), who first visited the area in 1801. Literature: Peat, Wilbur D.
