DESCRIPTION: A carved wooden figure carved by the Moba people in Togo, West Africa. The wooden figure called tchitcheri are prescribed by diviners to enhance the efficacy of personal, household, and village shrines. Carved from a single piece of wood, tchitcheri are rendered in highly abstract, minimalist human form. Minimal attention is given to facial features, with a reductive figure the upper body forms a unified, continuous surface, with its arms held at its sides.
