A marvelous Maya cylinder from El Salvador, ca. 400 - 800 AD. This choice example is 6-7/8" high, 5-1/2" in diameter, it is decorated with carved zoomorphic and stucco covered registers that are fertility related. The two carved bands depict frogs and are accented with highly burnished black slip. The intervening bands are ribbed and covered with blue and red stucco, with the broad rim band retaining some of the original designs painted in white, blue and yellow. Strong mineral deposits, minor repair. (MA1759)
