Civil War Missouri Soldier Portraits, Lithograph and Charcoal
American, ca. 1860s. Two Civil War soldier lithographs enhanced with charcoal, depicting the same individual in different years according inscriptions. One portrait inscribed in pencil James J. Lyon 1861 / 1st Lieut. H 24th Mo. Inf. Vols., and the second inscribed J. J. Lyon 1865 / Lieut. Col. & AIG 16th Army Corps. Lyon enlisted at the age of 24 on December 1, 1861 as a First Lieutenant and was commissioned in to the "H" company of the Missouri 24th infantry, transferred to the Field & Staff Missouri 21st infantry in December 1864, and finally commissioned into the US Volunteers Inspector General Department in March 1865, discharged on August 1, 1865. Promotions included Captain (July 1862), Major (September 1864), and Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Inspector General (March 1865). Each framed; each 15 x 11.5 in. (sight); 20.25 x 16.75 in. (frame).
