Black metal body, working metal crank, black Bakelite receiver.An antique desk set manufactured ca. 1948 by Oki Electric Co., Ltd. of Tokyo, Japan. Heavy black metal body with original working metal crank, original antique black Bakelite receiver, and black cord in very good condition. Sometimes recorded historically as a Fuhrer Phone, possibly because of its use by military and civilian officials during the Second World War era. Oki Electric manufactured the first telephone in Japan in 1881, just five years after Bell invented the phone, and presented at the 1885 International Inventions Exhibition in London. The company was widely responsible for the early spread of phones in Japan. Metal manufacturer plate stamped OKI ELECTRIC CO LTD, TOKYO JAPAN, partially obscured by age related wear.
