bronze, Tibet, Guge Kingdom , 11th / 12th century,Size: 54 cmPadmapani Lokeshvara, standing on a small base, holding a lotus in the left hand and showing the varada mudra with his right. A deer skin hanging over his left shoulder, his head crowned the center leaf showing an effigy of Amithaba. This standing Lokeshvara shares a number of elements with a similar figure labelled 11th-12th century Western Tibet on display at the Brookly Museum. For example the incised leg-length dhoti, the crown with triangular panels and an effigy of Amitabha at the front and the large floral earrings. The capital of the Guge Kingdom, Tsaparang, was located in West Tibet. It is likely that the area gained prominence in the 9th century during the dissolution of the central Tibetan kingdom after the time of King Langdharma.
