Two Scenes from the Tale of Prince Genji (Genji Monogatari), Japan, Tosa School, Edo period, two album leaves, framed under glass, each 23 x 16,7 cm, ink, color and goldpigment on paper. 1) Scene from chapter 4: The guardian of Prince Genji picks a gourd flower, when a lady appears presenting a fan to him on which he is to present the flower to the Prince. In the very fine and detailed painting a litter is seen in front of the door to the ladies quarters. 2) Scene from chapter 25: From behind a screen Prince Genji watches his beloved girl Tamakazura being together with his younger brother Prince Hyobu. From a bag he sets free fireflies to see the beauty of Tamakazura and the Prince for a moment. In front of the building a Japanese garden with flowers and rocks is depicted.
