In the Style of Zhou Chen (active ca. 1500-1536), Scholar in a Pavilion at the Lake Shore, China, ca. 19th ct., hanging scroll, 131,5 x 40,5 cm, ink and light colors on paper. Signature by the artist: "Dongcun Zhou Chen". One double seal of the artist: "Zhou", "Chen". Four collectors' seals: "shenpin", "Wang Shimin wo jin shang shuhua yin" etc. Zhou Chen, style name Dongcun, was the leading professional painter in Suzhou of his time. He was the teacher of Qiu Ying (ca. 1494-1552) and Tang Yin (1470-1523) and painted in the former style of the academic tradition of the South Song dynasty (1127-1279). Fine, narrative figure painting and 'axe cut' rocks with dramatic shading are characteristic for his style as is seen very clearly in this painting- Property from an important South German private collection of a nobleman, starting his collection of Tibetan art in 1965, mostly purchased from Nagel and Schoettle East Asian Art, Stuttgart, the present painting acquired at Breuninger Antiquitäten, Stuttgart, 20 May 1971 - Folds, wear, damages due to age
