Property from an important Berlin private collection - Xia Gui was a court painter at the Painting Academy of the Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279). Together with Ma Yuan (active ca. 1190-1225) he created the so called Ma-Xia-style of Chinese landscape painting which was typical for the Southern Song Academy Style. This painting shows very clearly the characteristics of this style. The landscape composition is developed from one corner and the mountains and rocks are rendered with a few broad and sharp 'axe cut' brush strokes showing quite crystalline forms. The fishing boat adds to the decorative and romantic mood of the painting - Very minro damages due to age, wear
