A RARE LARGE WUCAI 'HUNDRED DEER' VASE, China, Wanli mark and period, sturdily potted, of ovoid form rising to a gently waisted neck with a lipped rim, painted in underglaze-blue, green, yellow, aubergine, brown, and iron-red enamels, showing a continuous scene around the body, depicting deer in various poses, some resting, grazing, some prancing and some partially hidden behind foliage and trees. All above a band of stylised lappets at the foot and below a ruyi border at the shoulder, with a band of alternating chrysanthemum and peony florets at the neck, the mostly unglazed base with a centered and recessed circle with the Wanli mark in underglaze blue within a double circle. - Property from a German private collection, acquired in the 1980s - Cf. with a related piece, sold by Sotheby's NY, 15 March 2017, Lot 12 - Once broken in multiple pieces, restored and partially repainted
