An antique black and chrome metal rotary dial Spacesaver compact phone manufactured ca. 1945 by American Electric Telephone Company with Bakelite receiver. Stamped on Bakelite grip A.E. CO. MADE IN U.S.A. The original phone number stamped on the label, OLympic-4-3391, is an example of the historic 2L-5N phone number system (2 Letters, 5 Numbers) which was used starting in the late 1940s to prepare U.S. consumers for nationwide Direct Distance Dialing. (Under that system, a well-known number in New York City was listed as PEnnsylvania 6-5000.) Original cord, very good condition. Wall cord and phone adapter. American Electric Telephone Co. opened in 1894 in Kokomo, Indiana. The Spacesaver designer was employed by several manufacturers from 1930-1957.
