Red spinels are among the most prized due in no small part to their close resemblance to rubies. For centuries, spinels were confused with and indeed called rubies: the 170ct "Black Prince Ruby" and the 352ct "Timur Ruby" - both in the British Crown Jewels and both from Tajikistan – are in fact spinels.
