American Federal Banjo Timepiece :
The mahogany case has gilt wood "rope" panels enclosing a reverse painted depiction of "The Constitution's Escape". This is commemorating, perhaps, the most famous Naval encounter of the War of 1812. The 44-gun American frigate Constitution, under the command of Isaac Hull, encountered seven Royal Navy British ships on her way to New York from Baltimore. It spent several almost windless days in early July sailing north along the New Jersey coast and somehow managed to outmaneuver and escape the entire British fleet. The reverse painting is an interpretation of an engraving made after 1812 that depicts a brief encounter between the Constitution and the HMS Shannon off of Delaware Bay that led to the famous escape. The clock is from a local estate. It is not in running condition but is complete.
