A Pair of Royal Korean Niello-Inlaid SilverYouCovered Urns in Hardwood Presentation Boxes, Said to Have Been Gifted to The Taisho Emperor, Korea, circa 1912Marks: (character marks)11-1/4 x 8 x 7-1/2 inches (28.6 x 20.3 x 19.1 cm) (each)157.32 troy ounces The yue urns, with domed covers with lobed finials, arched handles with anthropomorphic elements, and bulging bodies, and round feet, all profusely inlaid with niello enamel, both housed in hardwood boxes with exposed dovetail joints and character marks incised and painted to the lid, both stored in divided, padded, and silk lined Japanese box. The provenance suggests that the pair of yue urns were produced by the Kingdom of Korea's royal atelier at the command of King Li of Korea and presented to Emperor Taisho of Japan, who was in the possession of the yue urns from 1911-1926.
