A Chinese blanc de chine Dehua figurine of a robed Bodhidharma or Damo standing upon ocean waves and dating from the late Ming Dynasty. There are 2 marks on the back: a He Chao shui mark, and a Pu Ji Shan Ren mark. Dimensions are: 12 inches tall X 6 inches wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: The figurine stands unevenly, there is a firing crack in the back, and there are a few miniscule chips and hairline firing cracks. Provenance: From the Slade family collection of Chinese ceramics and jade; assembled by three members of the family and by descent to the present owner. The collection was begun by Henry Adolphus Warre Slade (1869 - 1936), British businessman, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (1908/09) and the Director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation between 1900 and 1902. The collection was added to by his sons, Royal Navy Commander Gerald Gordon Slade, who fought in both World Wars, and his brother Maurice Gordon Slade. The Slade family hold peerage and are noted in Charles Mosley's.
