A large Chinese Kangxi blue and white porcelain brush pot. The brush pot depicts a musician in a boat beside a scholar in a mountain landscape by a river with a scholar and attendant on a bridge. Dimensions are: 6 1/4 inches tall X 7 1/2 inches wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is a large crack in the bottom, a glaze defect in the tree area, minor chipping to the base, and numerous small pits. There is also an 8mm area of repair. The brush pot is not circular, it is oval shaped. Provenance: From the Slade family collection of Chinese ceramics and jade; assembled by three members of the family and by descent to the present owner. The collection was begun by Henry Adolphus Warre Slade (1869 - 1936), British businessman, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (1908/09) and the Director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation between 1900 and 1902. The collection was added to by his sons, Royal Navy Commander Gerald Gordon Slade, who fought in both World Wars, and his brother Maurice Gordon Slade. The Slade family hold peerage and are noted in Charles Mosley's.
