The work is monogrammed E.S.T., dated 1873, and bears the artist's stamp. Elizabeth Southerden Thompson met the painters Meissonnier and Detaille in Paris in 1870, who sparked her interest in military painting. She married General Butler, hence the nickname 'Lady Butler'.
