|Since their inception in 1860 Panerai have had a long history of producing watches for the Italian Navy as well as other forces at various times. In 1993 the company decided to move these once exclusive military watches into the open market allowing for the general population to obtain their products. The nickname 'Pre-Vendome' covers this period from 1993 until 1997 when the company were acquired by the Vendome Group which is now known as the conglomerate Richemont.
