The historical person of Sacagawea, who traveled with Lewis and Clark, blended several roles — helpmate to the explorers, mother to her young child, victim who is restored to her family. The conflation of these roles may help to explain why Sacagawea is one of the most often portrayed women in American art."According to the Harry Jackson Studios List of Published Sculptures and Commissions, the present work was cast in an edition of 10 with 4 artist models.
