Gerardus Laurentius Keultjes (Dutch, 1786-c. 1818) Dutch Vessels at Sea Signed "G.L. Keultjes f." l.r., inscribed in Dutch on an older label affixed to the reverse, inscribed with the artist's name and dates in a later hand on the reverse, identified on a modern label affixed to the reverse. Oil on panel, 10 1/8 x 12 1/8 in. (25.5 x 30.8 cm), framed. Condition: Crack to panel across l.r. corner, surface cracks from a knot in the panel c.r., retouch primarily to the sky, paint losses and abrasions, drying cracks, fine craquelure, staining. Estimate $1,500-2,000 Signature is hidden beneath the lip of the frame. Two abraded red wax seal remnants on the reverse. The Dutch label is shaped like a shield, and the writing is very hard to make out, but one may discern the work "Schip" and, perhaps, the proper name "Juger." Framed dimensions are 13 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging.
