A GEORGE IV PROVINCIAL SILVER CHEROOT CASEof waisted form with shaped ends and reeded borders, embossed and chased on one side with a hare coursing scene and a single greyhound within scroll borders & against a matt ground; on the other side with fox-hunting scene and the name "Cottager", with an agate-set, button thumbpress by James Barber & Co., York 1822; 4.75" (12 cms) long; 5.5 oz*"Cottager" is very likely to have been a horse and there were several of that name running in the early 1820's. These included Mr Melon's six year old Cottager, which ran at Bridgewater Races on 20th August 1823; and Lord Rancliffe's Cottager, which sold for 220 guineas at Tattersalls' in January 1824.
