WILD (FRANK), RAYMOND PRIESTLEY AND GRIFFITH TAYLOR
'Rough surface on Campbell Glacier', gelatin silver print, SIGNED BY FRANK WILD, RAYMOND PRIESTLEY AND GRIFFITH TAYLOR beneath the image on the mount, pencil caption and ink stamp of "Mallet & Sons, Photographer & Publishers, The Abbey Studio, Church St., Tewkesbury" on verso, image 227 x 288mm., [?1908 or 1911]
|Raymond Priestley and Thomas Griffith Taylor accompanied the Terra Nova expedition as geologists. Priestley was a member of the six-strong Northern Party, led by Lieutenant Victor L.A. Campbell, after whom the Campbell Glacier was named. The two men were good friends, having met at Cambridge, with Taylor eventually marrying Priestley's sister Doris. Priestley lived at Tewkesbury, suggesting that the present print may have been commissioned by him. Priestley also knew co-signatory Frank Wild, both being members of Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. The presence of Wild's signature suggests the photograph might dates from the earlier expedition, or alternatively celebrate a later gathering of three of the "Heroic Age" of Antarctic Celebration.Provenance: Christie's, 6 May 1993, part of lot 91 (attributing the photograph to Frank Wild on the 1908 expedition).
