Exceptional Sphene
Madagascar Sphene is the older name for the mineral titanite and is derived from the Greek meaning "wedge" referring to its classic wedge-shaped crystal habit—it is still used by gemologists to describe gem-quality titanite. The name titanite is more typically used amongst mineralogists today and refers to its content of titanium. Madagascar remains the main source for facet-grade sphene—yet few examples reaching the market are of the quality of the present stone. The present stone, faceted as a Portuguese-cut, is an exceptional example of its type with its vivid chartreuse green body color and vibrant red flashes of color. A world-class sphene by any measure and a rare stone for the collector and displays that sought-after dispersion for which this gem is beloved. Rarely seen in a size this large, at over 29 carats, this is a very special offering. Weighing approximately 29.17 carats and measuring 16.5 x 13.0mm
