Pink Beryl var. Morganite
In 1911, when pink beryl entered the marketplace, Madagascar was the location of its source. George Kunz, Vice President of Tiffany's at the turn of the century named this new-found gem in honor of John Pierpoint Morgan, who was a distinguished client of the jewelry store and who made many donations to the American Museum of Natural History. Kunz often arranged for the financier to buy collections directly from Tiffany, with the store acting as intermediary, which Morgan would then donate to the Museum.Morganite is the orange to pink variety of beryl. Other members of the beryl family are aquamarine, golden beryl and emerald. Morganite, because of its delicate color, ample hardness, comparative rarity and its brilliance, is quite popular in jewelry. This Portuguese, circular-cut pink beryl has an attractive slightly peach color. This size is exceptional and the high degree of clarity is shown off to its best advantage with the flattering cut. Weighing approximately 59.32 carats and measuring 25.60 x 17.74mm
