The Ref. 116520 also features the "Daytona" in red text above the 60-second, taking design cues from the vintage "Big Red" Daytona Reference 6263. After a few years, collectors who had long awaited the release of the new Rolex chronograph began to notice colour changes to the white dials in the earlier examples of Ref. 116520 made between 2000 and 2002 (P, K and some Y serial numbers). The present rare example of Ref. 116520 with a "Y" serial number, best shows this phenomenon with the dial having changed from its original white to a rich, cream hue. Rolex seemingly amended the materials used on the dials to correct this "defect" in subsequent batches, making these earlier versions highly desirable to collectors. "Tropical" dials in Rolex watches or "colour-changing" dials are especially sought-after by vintage Rolex collectors and it is likely the earlier versions of the Rolex 116520 with a Cream dial, like the present example, will become increasingly rare and difficult to acquire.
