A THANGKA OF CATURBHUJA MAHAKALA, East Tibet, late 18th/early 19th ct., framed. Depicted in the centre above Caturbhuja stands Chakrasamvara with his wisdom partner Varavarahi, in their iconographic blue and red colours, Caturbhuja is depicted with four arms and one face, holding his attributes: the sword of wisdom, the trident for the destruction of the three mind poisons, greed, hatred, and pride, as well as a human heart and a knife, symbolising the vanquishing of desire. Helping him in his guarding action are raven-head figures: Remati on a mule, Mahakala Bernagchen, and the lion-headed carnivore Shaza Nagpo, all surrounded by wisdom flames. - Property from an important South German private collection, assembled between 1968 and 2005 mostly from Schoettle East Asian Art and Joachim Baader, Munich - Publ.
