Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A beautiful cast-bronze depiction of the goddess Isis-Hathor seated with one hand held to her bare breast ready to suckle the infant Horus (sometimes called Harpokrates) seated in her lap. She wears an ankle-length gown, her typical feathered vulture headdress with a projecting avian head, and a horned crown with a central sun disk she adopted from the goddess Hathor. Horus is shown nude with arms draped to his sides and a minimalist visage flanked by his characteristic braided side lock of youth. As a cult figure from this time period, Isis is often shown as a mother goddess as we see here. Covered in lustrous layers of green and russet patina, this is a touching portrayal, probably intended for a niche in a temple or a grave. Custom museum-quality display stand included.
