Sound and Body of Mind Freezing Signed and dated 2008 on the reverse Mixed media on canvas, 72.6 x 60.5 cm Provenance: - Reflex Modern Art Gallery, Amsterdam (2009) (incl. copy invoice) - Private collection, the Netherlands N.B.: Kunikata is a protege of the famous Takashi Murakami (1962), the guru of the kuriieita generation. The Kuriieita were active in the '90 and '00, the so-called 'lost decades', and these young artists grew up in a hardened Japanese society. Murakami was an active mentor to a selection of young artists like Kunikata and organised several exhibitions of their work. He also writes essays in which he contextualizes his protege's work. Kunikata has found a balance between manga (Japanese cartoons) and art under Murakami's wings. She is strongly influenced by otaku, sexually explicit manga, and treats isues like masochism, lonelyness and depression in her colourful oeuvre. Kunikata's work is steadily growing in popularity under a new generation of collectors.
