B.R.M. (1967) Polyester, H. 119.5 cm Provenance: - Collection Salco Tromp Meesters, Arnhem - Auction Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 30 November 1990 - Collection Shinkichi Tajiri, Baarlo - Galerie Artline, The Hague Literature: H. Bavelaar & E. Barents, Shinkichi Tajiri - beeldhouwer sculptor, Gent, 1990, p. 82 (comparable example in bronze) N.B.I: B.R.M. is an abbreviation for British Racing Monsters. This sculpture marks the transition in Tajiri's oeuvre from Machines to Knots. Inspired by the motor's exhaust system, this sculpture was the first model of a new series of works, the Knots, which symbolised unity as well as complexity. Tajiri: "In 1967 I wanted a sculptural statement that would cut through all the mystification that I felt was invading the art scene. Sculptures that would be instantly communicable to everyone and at the same time formally timeless." N.B.II: On the bottom side is a label of the Gemeentemuseum, Den Haag (inv.no. Bq-x-1969).
