Description: 'Poissonnières' / Fish wives, signed and dated 'R. Kimpe/'47' (lower left); titled 'Poissonnières' (on the reverse) oil on canvas, 85x122 cm Exhibition: -Laren, Singer Museum/Middelburg, Zeeuws Museum, 'De gulden middenweg, Reimond Kimpe 1885-1970', 19 January-9 March 1997. Literature: -Karin Verboeket and Hesther van den Donk, 'De gulden middenweg: Reimond Kimpe 1885-1970', Laren 1997, ill. p. 19 and cat. p. 29. Provenance: -Purchased after 1970 from the son of the painter by the parents of the owner, who were befriended with the painter. In this beautiful tonal painting 'Poissonnières', Kimpe depicts fish wives selling the catch of the day on the market. Their large white caps from Zuid-Beveland seem to be floating on their tiny heads. The cracked symmetry in this composition, due to the asymmetric placement of the table, has a surprising effect on the spectator.. Resale right is applicable
