Description: A winter landscape with skaters on the ice and a Dutch town on the horizon, signed 'N.J. Roosenboom' (lower right) oil on canvas, 63,5x88,5 cm Provenance: -In the collection of the family of the present owner for at least 100 years. Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom was a well-connected painter in Dutch romanticism. As one of the most promising pupils of Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870) he soon became a master in landscape painting and in 1835 he married one of Schelfhout's daughters Maria Cornelia Margaretha Schelfhout (1811-1880). Roosenboom was well respected amongst his colleagues, his many collaborations with the popular Belgian animalier Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (1798-1881) are a good example of his artistic network. Subsequent to his success he was the teacher of other famous nineteenth century romantics like Fredrik Marinus Kruseman (1816-1882) and Cornelis Lieste (1815-1861). He also taught the basics of painting to his daughter Margaretha Roosenboom (1843-1896), the renowned still life painter.
