Description: Three witches around a potion pot, inscribed 'Album./Aug Allebé' (lower right) watercolour and ink on paper, 30,7x38 cm The inscription suggests that the present drawing was part of a portfolio possibly given to August Allebé (1838-1927), the famous nineteenth century artist and teacher of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. It has been suggested that this drawing depicts a scene out of Shakespeare's Macbeth (Act IV, scene 1). Three witches prepare a potion around a charmed pot with all sorts of grim ingredients among others a finger of a birth-strangled babe.
