A plaster version exists in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., bequest of the artist, 1966.John Barrymore (1882-1942) was an American actor from a famous theatrical family, who worked on the stage, silent films, and later motion pictures with sound. He had lead roles in the films Svengali (1934), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), Twentieth Century (1934), and Dinner at Eight (1934). When Barrymore achieved fame during the silent film era, he received the nickname "The Great Profile" based on his striking facial features that are captured in Paul Manship's rendition in the present work.
